If your dog is allergic to grains, simply leave out the whole wheat flour, and bake them with a substitute of millet. This light weight whole grain is a good substitute for the finer gluten grains, and will be easy to digest. This is the same thing as puffed wheat, that we eat for cereal in milk. Pumpkin Muffin Dog Treats
We make these scrumptious dog treats in a non-stick muffin pan, and we use a really good one from Williams-Sonoma. They have a gold touch bake ware line, that ensures the final product is soft and chewy in the center, and crispy and crunchy on the outside. For our two dogs, one muffin makes for a perfect dog treat. Our senior dog has a less than easy time eating hard crunchy treats, so the soft center is good for her, and the outer crunchy area is great for our younger dog. You can adjust the recipe to make crisp cookies, by rolling out the dough into cut out cookie shapes that are thinner, and adjust the cookie time to your preference.
- 1 & 1/4 whole wheat flour
- 2 1/4 all purpose flour
- 1/2 oats or quick oatmeal
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp nutmeg
- 1 can of 8 oz pumpkin
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- 2 eggs
Bake your Dog Treats with Kind Care
Combine all dry ingredients, and set aside. Warm your oven to 325 degrees. Spray your non stick muffin pan with some olive oil spray. Mix remaining wet ingredients, and then gently fold together. If the mixture is too dry, add another 1/4 cup of broth or water. If too wet, add more whole wheat flour or oats. Pumpkin can be easily substituted with peanut butter. Bake for 30 minutes and check with your finger to see if the center of your muffin rises back after some slight pressure. Cool in the pan until close to room temperature. Dance with your dogs until they are cool enough to share, as the apprehension will be more than any dog can stand.
Storage for your Dog Treats
Depending on your expert tricky counter surfer, you can safely store these baked goodies on the counter in the winter, and better and cooler in the fridge in summer. Keep in an air tight container. Store in your fridge for 2 weeks, room temperature for one week.
